Orca Bay Mystery Step 3

I finally finished all the half square triangles for Step 3.  I waited a bit while I ordered some more neutral fabric that would be a little more interesting than what I currently have - which was mostly tone on tone. All my white/off-white prints are used in another project.

I actually a few extra because I got carried away.  As I was sewing up the last ones, I sat aside one that looked too small.  However, when I measured it,  I discoverd that it was the perfect size of 2 inches unfinished.  Uh-Oh!

I started measuring and discovered that most of my half square triangles are 1/16 to 1/8 inch TOO BIG!  BUMMER!.  I had measured everything when I first got started and it was correct.

However when step 4 came out, I took off my seam guide and did several of the larger string blocks.  I then put that aside to also order some more oranges for more variety.  I then started back to piecing half square triangles with some of the strips I had already cut.

BUT  I did not re-measure the units.  Obviously when I reattached my seam guide it was a little off.  So now I get to sliver cut almost all of the 370 half square triangles before I can move on to step 5.

I have currently trimmed about 1/3 of them.  Here is a small sample of my sliver pile.

Oh well, live and learn.  I cut 3 small rectangles 1 and 1/2 inches in width.  Reattached my seam guide and sewed the strips together.    When that was done, I measured the center strip.  Exactly 1 inch finished! Yeah!

Now the dilemma is - do I continue with sliver cutting  all the triangles and move directly into step 5 - while I know the seam guide is in the correct place? Or do I go back to piecing step 4 - since I now have more oranges to choose from?

Oh, such difficult decisions!   Hmm.  I guess I will finish sliver cutting first and them make a decision.  By that time I may be so sick of purple and neutrals that the orange would be a good break.

  1. better they be too BIG than too little! I would probably sliver-cut them...just to be safe. I know it takes time, but it might save you later on.

  3. Too big is much better than too small. Looking good.
